An Analysis of Lexical Collocation Errors in Students’ Writing

Mastering lexical collocation uses in learning English as a foreign language is absolutely essential to develop students’ communicative skills and linguistic abilities. Most students, however, have problems with putting words together characteristic of “natural” native speaker-like manner during writing. Students tend use strange expressions therefore production does not sound natural carries imprecise meaning. With regard this underlying issue, the main emphasis current study was lying on investigation types causes error committed by EFL students their argumentative Through qualitative research approach applying descriptive-analytic method, sixteen university were chosen purposively. The data collected from two principal sources i.e., writing samples semi-structured interviews. In terms analysis technique, employed an technique developed Ellis (1994) analyze obtained errors applied content provided Kumar (2011) interview results. revealed 54 erroneousness consisting verb + noun/pronoun (PP), adjective noun, adverb adjective, noun combination. These caused lack competence, influence, synonym, overgeneralization, approximation.
